- Class 4 (cars with up to 8 passenger seats & small vans with a weight under 3000kg).

- Class 7 (Commercial vehicles - vans/trucks with a weight between 3000kg & 3500kg).

Vehicles 3 years old & over must have an annual safety check (MOT). During your MOT the following items are checked -  

• Electrical equipment - including headlights, brake lights, indicators and fog lights.

• Steering - including the condition of the steering wheel & check for wear/tear.

• Tyres - including tread depth and condition of the tyres.

• Suspension - including shock absorbers and any corrosion and wear.

• Brakes - including overall condition of pedals and brake efficiency.

• Seat belts and seats

• Exhaust and emissions - including checking for any leaks in the exhaust and fuel system

• Mirrors, wipers and windscreen - including any damage to the windscreen and condition of the wiper blades

• Bodywork - corrosion/rust/obvious damage.

 

Some things that are not checked during an MOT include:

• The condition of the engine, gearbox, or clutch

• Spare tyres that aren't fitted
